Everton given more time to find stadium funds
Everton have been handed a four-week extension to raise the £30m they need to press ahead with plans for a new stadium on the Mersey waterfront.
The club have struggled to find financial backers to meet their share of the £150m Kings Dock redevelopment scheme but project co-ordinators Liverpool Vision are prepared to give the club more time.
Everton insist they are committed to the project, which would ultimately see them leave Goodison Park, although they admit the necessary funds are not yet in place.
A club statement said: “Whilst Bill Kenwright and his fellow directors continue to work tirelessly on the King’s Waterfront project, it is wrong to suggest that anyone at Everton has ever confirmed the club has now raised its required contribution of £30million.
“Talks and negotiations aimed at securing that contribution are on-going and will continue around the clock if necessary.
“Everton remains totally committed to the King’s Waterfront scheme, believing, as it does, that a world-class facility of this nature will benefit not only the club but also Merseyside and its people.
“As is only right and proper with a scheme of this scale and cost, all interested parties are bound by confidentiality agreements and whilst the club understands that such agreements can occasionally lead to a sense of frustration amongst those who seek information, Everton will continue to conduct its business in a professional and discreet manner.”
If it goes ahead, the Kings Dock will be a multi-purpose venue for football as well as major showbusiness events and rock concerts.
