SPL chief to step down

Scottish Premier League chief executive Roger Mitchell looks set to quit his post after four years.

Scottish Premier League chief executive Roger Mitchell looks set to quit his post after four years.

An SPL board meeting will be held tomorrow where confirmation of Mitchell’s departure is expected.

The SPL chief executive was left frustrated when his brainchild, SPL TV, collapsed in the spring after Celtic and Rangers vetoed the proposal.

The 10 non-Old Firm clubs subsequently resigned from the SPL days before this season began in response to the vote.

The Glasgow giants and the rebel 10 have since been uncomfortable bed-fellows in SPL discussions.

On Friday, the 10 admitted they were no nearer a solution to the problems which have split the opposing factions.

Mitchell has previously admitted the current 11-1 voting system, which is at the heart of the squabbling, has frustrated him.

The SPL are making no comment until after the board meeting tomorrow but look certain to be searching for a replacement for Mitchell.
