Parma crash out of Cup

Two-time UEFA Cup winners Parma suffered a shock exit from the competition when they were beaten in extra time by Wisla Krakow.

The Italians, who lifted the trophy in 1995 and 1999, looked to be going through after they were 1-0 ahead on the night and 3-1 ahead on aggregate with 11 minutes remaining.

But Kamil Kosowski levelled and Maciej Zurawski netted in the 80th minute to take the match into an extra period.

Zurawski then scored his second of the night and Daniel Dubicki completed the misery for Parma, who also won the European Cup Winners’ Cup and European Super Cup in the 90s.

It was a great night though for the Poles, whose UEFA Cup adventure started with a qualifying tie against Glentoran way back on August 13.

Besiktas striker Ilhan Mansiz was both hero and villain as they ended the UEFA Cup campaign of 2001 finalists Alaves.

The Turkish international struck in the seventh minute for the only goal of the second leg in Istanbul to clinch a 2-1 aggregate success.

But Ilhan’s evening took a turn for the worse late on when he reacted badly to a foul by Ibon Begona which sparked a mass brawl, and both players were given their marching orders.

Italian giants Lazio edged into the third round after Enrico Chiesa netted in the 77th minute to prevent their tie with Red Star Belgrade going into extra time.

Chiesa’s free-kick cancelled out Branko Boskovic’s opener seven minutes earlier to earn a 2-1 aggregate victory for Roberto Mancini’s side.

Celta Vigo fared better than fellow Spaniards Alaves as a 1-1 draw followed their 3-0 first leg win over Viking Stavanger, who put out Chelsea in the previous round.

The two German sides in action tonight had mixed fortunes with Schalke going through and Werder Bremen going out.

Schalke drew 0-0 at home to Legia Warsaw tonight, but progressed courtesy of their 3-2 win in Poland.

Bremen, trailing 2-1 from the first leg, threw away a two-goal lead against Vitesse Arnhem to draw 3-3 on the night and lose 5-4 on aggregate.

Ronaldinho returned to the Paris St Germain line-up and oversaw their easy passage at the expense of National Bucharest.

Brazil’s World Cup-winner missed the weekend draw with Sochaux with a groin strain, but was inspirational in their 1-0 win at the Parc des Princes which secured a 3-0 aggregate success.
