McClaren steps down with England

Middlesbrough boss Steve McClaren has today stepped down from his post as England coach.

McClaren had been assisting Sven-Goran Eriksson with the national squad since the summer of 2001 when he took over the Middlesbrough hot-seat.

But McClaren said today: “I have decided to step down from my role to concentrate fully on the affairs of Middlesbrough Football Club.”

The 41-year-old says his decision has nothing to do with yesterday’s resignation of FA chief executive Adam Crozier.

He continued: “I actually told Adam of my intention to step down earlier this week – Sven has known for some time too, as I spoke to him after England’s game with Macedonia.
