Robbie a Spurs hero in Bolton win
Tottenham’s Robbie Keane scored his first goals at White Hart Lane to fire Glenn Hoddle’s team back into third place in the Premiership with a hard-fought win over Bolton.
Republic of Ireland striker Keane – who opened his Spurs account at Blackburn a fortnight ago – grabbed his first home goal since his move from Leeds when he pounced after 58 minutes.
The lead lasted just four minutes, as former France international Youri Djorkaeff latched on to Kevin Nolan’s chip and scored from a tight angle.
But 22-year-old Keane, who has been an instant hit at Spurs, was on the spot again after 74 minutes to sweep home a cross from substitute Gustavo Poyet.
Simon Davies, a hero for Wales in their midweek win over Italy, sealed the points with a fine finish in the final minute after playing a one-two with Teddy Sheringham.
The day started positively for Spurs as Stephen Carr was back in the side after injury and Poyet was on the bench. But when the game kicked off Bolton had a good chance to open the scoring in the first minute when the won a free-kick a yard outside the box.
Chris Perry chopped down Michael Ricketts but Djorkaeff curled the set piece over both the wall and the crossbar.
Keane weaved his way past three defenders into the box after nine minutes but just had to stretch for the shot, and poked it wide.
Bolton hit back a minute later with the first good effort on target, and Nolan’s swerving shot was well saved by Kasey Keller.
Keane made another teasing run after 13 minutes before unleashing a shot from just outside the box which flew over the crossbar.
At the other end Gardner’s chip saw Ricketts bundle the ball just wide before Keane turned provider with a lovely ball into Sheringham inside the box, but he drifted too wide and his cross was gathered by Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Spurs put together a fine move after 24 minutes when Perry found Davies on the right. He delivered a delightful cross for Keane who planted a free header wide.
It was a similar story after 32 minutes as Jamie Redknapp found Davies, but when the ball was delivered into the box Sheringham mis-hit his shot.
Redknapp won a free-kick a yard outside the Bolton box in a central position when he was tripped by Nolan after 40 minutes. The former England midfield man tried something special himself as Keane rolled it short, he chipped it up and volleyed the ball narrowly past the right post.
After 49 minutes when Carr hit a fierce half-volley from just outside the box. Jaaskelainen blocked it but could not hold on to the ball which bounced off the crossbar.
A minute later Keane beat the offside trap but delayed his shot and Whitlow made a good saving tackle.
Jaaskelainen came to the rescue after 54 minutes following a neat exchange of passes between Keane and Sheringham whose shot was brilliantly blocked by the goalkeeper.
For all their possession, Spurs were almost caught napping after 56 minutes when Goran Bunjevcevic allowed Djorkaeff’s pass to run to Ricketts. The angle was not the best and he curled his shot wide.
But Bunjevcevic made amends two minutes later as he began the move which gave Keane his first goal.
The Yugoslav came out from defence down the left and played to Davies at the back of the box. He crossed first time and Keane pounced to sweep home his second goal in successive games.
The lead lasted just four minutes, however. Nolan chipped the ball into the box and Djorkaeff got in behind Perry and drilled his shot beyond Keller.
Bolton threatened again after 66 minutes but when Djorkaeff fed Ricketts in the box his first touch let him down and Keller gathered.
Hoddle introduced Poyet in place of Etherington after 70 minutes.
The change had an instant effect as Davies fed Poyet inside the right edge of the box and his first-time cross was again swept home by Keane.
It was not Sheringham’s day. With eight minutes remaining he had a free header from Carr’s right-wing cross, but sent it sailing over from six yards.
Then in the final minute Davies played a one-two with Sheringham before burying the ball inside the far post to seal the points and move into third place in the Premiership after Middlesbrough lost at Charlton.
