Sunderland player-coach, Niall Quinn, admits he has first-hand knowledge of three of the names being linked with the post of Sunderland manager – but has no intention of taking the job himself.

The former Republic of Ireland international is holding the fort at The Stadium of Light while the Sunderland board ponder their next move, following Monday’s sacking of Peter Reid.

The club have already said they hope to have the new man in place in time for the October 19 clash with West Ham.

And, Quinn is well acquainted with a trio of top managers in the frame – George Graham, David O’Leary and Ireland boss Mick McCarthy.

Quinn said: “There are so many names being linked with the job, and yes, I know a few of them.

“George Graham gave me my first real success in football (at Arsenal). Attention then switched to David O’Leary (who he played with at Arsenal and for the Republic Ireland) – he was odds-on.

“I know him really well – and I know Mick really well.

“But, I haven’t spoken to any of those people and I won’t. Later tonight someone else’s name may become involved.”

Quinn continued on Radio 5 Live: “It’s hard to speculate about each of them and single one out.

“I just hope the club pick the one who will give the people of the city and the Sunderland fans what Peter Reid brought them for so long.

“The lads are in pretty decent shape considering the turmoil there has been.”

Quinn does not expect to be asked by his chairman to take over the hot-seat at the Wearside club.

He added: “I don’t think Bob Murray will ask me. Whatever help he needs to stabilise the club I will help him on.

“But, I have not overnight turned into someone who will manage a top club. I’m not a manager.”
