Guppy hails Larsson's wondergoal

Steve Guppy is certain Celtic’s winner at Dens Park will be among the finest in Henrik Larsson’s best goals collection – so good that he admits he is desperate to see it again on video.

The Swedish striker once again made his critics eat their words by following up his record-equalling hat-trick in midweek with a sublime first-half moment of magic to give Celtic the points.

Team-mate Guppy was proud to be involved in the move leading up to the goal, which even he wants to savour time and time again.

“It was a fantastic goal from Henrik,” enthused Guppy. “He took it so well.

“It was a deserved goal which was coming. We only scored the one, but we created a lot of chances.

“I was surprised to see him on the right and then on the left. He looked up and hit a pinpoint cross to me and I was just weighing up the situation whether I was going to cut in or shoot myself.

But I was just about to shoot and I could hear him calling. There he was and I passed it to him and he did the rest.

“It was a fantastic goal to open up his body the way he did and clip or half-place it into the far post.

The keeper had no chance.

“It was a great goal and I look forward to seeing it again on TV because sometimes things happen so fast when you are on the pitch. It must be up there with some of the best Henrik’s scored.”

Dundee defender Lee Wilkie initially thought Larsson’s goal was a fluke - until he realised that it was just pure class.

The Scotland hopeful had a good game at the back, but there was nothing he or his team-mates could do to stop Celtic’s winner.

“It was a great finish,” admitted Wilkie. “At the time I never knew he meant it in that split second.

“But when I came to think about it after, I knew he did mean it. He made a good run down the right and finished it off in some style.”

The afternoon was even more satisfying for Celtic in that they kept the pressure on Scottish Premier League leaders Rangers.

The victory moved the champions to within a point of their arch rivals with the first Old Firm clash of the season looming.

“It was a good win for us,” admitted Guppy. “They certainly had a go, but we came up with all the answers.

“We were very pleased with the performance and result. It was important we won to stay in touch with Rangers.

“We have put the pressure on and it was a vital win which makes it all the more pleasing that we came up with the result.”

If Celtic are to retain the title then people might look back to this game - but Larsson’s wonder goal will no doubt stay in the memory of Guppy and everyone present at Dens Park for quite some time.
