United eye Spanish goalkeeper
Manchester United were today due to hold further talks with the agent of Spain goalkeeper Ricardo after he emerged as their prime target.
The Real Valladolid number one could move to Old Trafford before the transfer window closes on Saturday if talks go to plan.
Agent Pedro Bravo is in Manchester and has spoken to United about the prospect of signing the 30-year-old who was Spain’s second-choice stopper at the World Cup.
“It is true that I have spoken to Manchester United and that the English club are interested in Ricardo,” Bravo told PA International.
He confirmed that further talks were scheduled for today and he expected to know whether the deal would take place by this afternoon, although Valladolid said no offer had yet been tabled.
Ricardo is in the final year of his contract with the Spanish club who he joined from Atletico Madrid in 1998.
He showed terrific form last season as traditional minnows Valladolid finished comfortably in mid-table, and won the nod from Jose Antonio Camacho to go to the World Cup.
An injury to Santiago Canizares promoted him to second choice, though he saw no action in the Far East.
Valladolid spokesman Arturo Posada said: “Valladolid has not received an official offer as of today for Ricardo.
“Until we receive an offer, Valladolid cannot comment on this matter.
“Valladolid traditionally sell an important player every year, this year we have not sold anyone yet.”
United today denied reports that they were closing in on Derby’s Estonian goalkeeper Mart Poom.
They need cover for Fabien Barthez who has been plagued by a hip injury.
Inexperienced Northern Ireland goalkeeper Roy Carroll is currently deputising for Barthez.
