Ireland getting used to change of role

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy admits his team must get used to their new role as European heavyweights.

Republic of Ireland boss Mick McCarthy admits his team must get used to their new role as European heavyweights.

After spending the last decade as underdogs, McCarthy's men go into the clash with Finland in Helsinki very much the favourites.

During the World Cup campaign, Ireland remained unbeaten against Holland and Portugal in qualifiers, and Spain and Germany in the final stages.

Finland should therefore be disposed of in the Olympic Stadium, and McCarthy will also be expecting wins against Russia and Switzerland on the way to Euro 2004.

"We have probably created a bit more of a name for ourselves," said McCarthy.

"Finland will be wanting to take our scalp, especially considering we beat them 3-0 in Dublin last year.

"That scoreline didn't reflect their performance, so although we are coming off a good World Cup, we will have to play to our potential."
