Butler signs new deal with Sunderland

Sunderland’s Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Thomas Butler has signed a new three-year contract.

Sunderland’s Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Thomas Butler has signed a new three-year contract.

The 21-year-old, whose previous deal expired at the end of June, has committed himself to the Black Cats until the summer of 2005 after protracted negotiations finally drew to a close.

The midfielder, who made his Premiership debut at Charlton last season and showed superb form when on first team duty, looked to be on his way out of the club, but has played a full part in the club’s pre-season preparations and was used as a substitute in last night’s 1-1 draw with Royal Antwerp in Belgium.

"I’m glad to get everything sorted out and I’m looking forward to the start of the season," he said.

"I got a taste of Premiership football at the end of last season and I’m hoping to impress the manager and try to get into the side."
