Veron admits season was catastrophe

Manchester United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron has admitted his first season at Old Trafford was a ‘‘catastrophe’’.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson paid Lazio £28.1m (€44.7m) for Veron.

But the Argentinian’s arrival could not prevent United ending the season without a trophy.

And in the summer Argentina failed to live up to their billing as World Cup favourites, making a shock exit and adding to Veron’s woe.

‘‘Both things happened one after the other - and that makes last season a catastrophe,’’ Veron told The Sun.

‘‘I would like a bit more consistency. I want to start the way I played for the first 10 games of last season - then keep going for the whole year.’’

Veron is convinced United will be stronger this season following the £30million arrival of defender Rio Ferdinand from Leeds.

‘‘Rio has class and ability beyond his years. Football seems to be a stroll for him," he said.
