First-half goals seal Cats' win
York 0 Sunderland 3
Three first half goals gave a youthful Sunderland side victory in a testimonial match for York’s Paul Stancliffe at Bootham Crescent.
With the majority of Peter Reid’s first team squad set to start a three-game tour of Belgium, the match represented an opportunity for some of Reid’s other squad players to make an impression, with the Premiership season now three weeks away.
Striker Michael Reddy gave the Wearsiders the lead in the 10th minute, netting from six yards after York keeper John Collinson had parried Brendan McGill’s close-range header.
Soon after Slovakian international defender Stanislav Varga made it 2-0 when he headed in a corner from Swedish midfielder Stefan Schwarz.
And the scoring was completed in the 25th minute with the best goal of the game, Reddy outpacing Stuart Wise before cutting inside and rifling a fine low shot into the corner of Collinson’s net.
Reddy was denied a hat-trick in the second half when the York keeper came out on top in a one-on-one situation.
