Former Central Bank Governor Maurice O'Connell will chair the review of the FAI's involvement in the World Cup in 2002.

The FAI announced the decision today following a request by the Irish Sports Council.

Mr O’Connell will have the resources of an international sports management agency to assist in the process.

The terms of reference agreed at the FAI’s Board of Management meeting earlier in July are:

* To examine the performance and the role of the FAI in all operational matters in the preparation and support of the team at World Cup 2002.

* To consider the appropriateness and effectiveness of these procedures and arrangements which applied assessed against other similar international comparators.

* To examine how the international team fits into FAI structures.

* To recommend a strategy for the FAI to devise suitable policies to achieve greater success during the forthcoming European Championship and World Cup campaigns.
