Everton have ceased their efforts to sign Irish international Gary Breen because of the player’s excessive wage demands, it was reported today.

Reports said the former Coventry centre-half, who scored one of Ireland’s World Cup goals against Saudi Arabia, will now begin talks with Newcastle United about a possible contract.

Breen was released on a free transfer before the World Cup after his Coventry contract expired.

The reports said he was seeking £25,000 a week - almost €40,000.
