Irish fans best in business, say tournament organisers

Irish fans have been described as the best in the business by World Cup organisers.

The Republic of Ireland went out on a penalties to Spain in the last round, and their supporters have earned acclaim for the way they have conducted themselves throughout the tournament.

JAWOC tournament director Junji Ogura said: ‘‘They have provided amazing support to their team.

‘‘I believe they have taught all Japanese fans the joy of supporting football.

‘‘We were all very disappointed to see them bow out of the competition. They were the best supporters we have had at the World Cup.’’

Ogura was also full of praise for all those who have visited Japan over the past month for football’s premier tournament.

‘‘I must congratulate the international fans who have made their way to our country,’’ said Ogura.

‘‘It has been heart-warming to see the sharing of cultures and in a small way these encounters show the true power of football.

‘‘Any preconceptions of violence have been way off the mark.’’
