Ronaldo - We're getting better

With a quarter-final clash against England on the horizon, Ronaldo believes Brazil are getting ever closer to perfection.

Victory against Belgium on Monday will set the four-time champions up for a mouth-watering tie with Sven-Goran Eriksson’s men.

And their superstar striker reckons after three wins in the group stage to warm up, they should have hit top gear by next Friday.

‘‘Brazil aren’t perfect, but we’re reaching a level approaching that,’’ said the former world footballer of the year. ‘‘Now getting to that level is our next objective.

‘‘Without a doubt, we’ve made some mistakes in the group games, but we’ll try to iron out the little problems in the coming matches.’’

Brazil’s defenders have been the target for particular criticism, with coach Luiz Felipe Scolari complaining they gave away too many chances in the 5-2 win over Costa Rica.

But at the other end Ronaldo has had no problems, scoring four goals so far in the tournament to put four injury-ravaged years behind him.

And ominously he warned it is not just the Brazil team that is getting sharper with every game.

‘‘I’m very happy to be up there with the tournament’s top goalscorers,’’ said the Inter Milan striker.

‘‘Having played 90 minutes against Costa Rica gives me a lot of pleasure and a lot of hope, but I know I can get better.

‘‘I must always look to score because the goal is always the same - to win the World Cup.’’

And Ronaldo is confident they can overcome Belgium and book their date with England.

‘‘We watched the Belgium-Russia match yesterday and we studied the video again today,’’ he said.

‘‘We have nothing to fear from this team and there is no cause for alarm.

‘‘All we have to do is concentrate on playing our game and everything depends on us.

‘‘The important thing is that we try and play as we did in the group stage.’’
