Beckham gains praise from the master

Brazilian dead-ball expert Roberto Carlos has labelled England’s David Beckham one of the best free-kick takers in the world.

Beckham has had few opportunities to unleash his trademark curling free-kicks at this World Cup but Real Madrid star Carlos is aware of his potency at club level for Manchester United.

‘‘I’ve watched the way he shoots carefully, and it’s amazing. His technique is impressive,’’ Carlos said.

‘‘He can put the ball wherever he wants. Even better than me.’’

Carlos has been successful in Japan and South Korea with a net bulging effort against China as Brazil cruised to a 4-0 victory in their second game.

‘‘I guess the goalkeeper didn’t see the ball,’’ he said. ‘‘It makes me really happy that I’m always included on the lists of the better free-kick takers in the world, together with players like Beckham.’’
