FAI: Roy's statement 'brings closure'
The FAI has said Roy Keane's statement that he will not now return to the World Cup squad "brings closure to the matter".
The row over Roy Keane’s participation in the World Cup reached a climax last night. It was announced the Ireland ex-captain will not be flying to Japan to play for Ireland.
Several hundred people had gathered outside FAI headquarters in Dublin in protest.
The Man United midfielder is not prepared to make an apology for his part in the row with Mick McCarthy. It is believed a statement yesterday from players supporting Mick McCarthy finalised Keane's decision.
The former Irish captain issued a statement saying he appreciates all the support he has received, as well as the efforts made by a number of people on behalf of all the parties involved to help resolve this row.
Keane says he does not consider the best interests of Irish football will be served by his return to the World Cup. "The damage has been done", he said.
The FAI last night described the statement as bringing closure to the matter.
