Beckham tells of injury despair
David Beckham has revealed the depths of his despair when he thought he would miss the World Cup after breaking a bone in his foot.
In an ITV1 documentary filmed at the glittering pre-World Cup charity party he hosted with wife Victoria, he says he immediately realised he had suffered a fracture.
The England captain also dispelled speculation by announcing that unlike their son Brooklyn, their second child will not be named after the place where he or she was conceived.
The lavish, Japanese-themed party at the couple's imposing home, dubbed Beckingham Palace, in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, was held in aid of the children's charity the NSPCC.
Beckham tells the programme, to be broadcast at 9pm on Sunday, he feared the worst as he hobbled on the touchline following the tackle in the Champions League quarter-final tie with Deportivo La Coruna.
"As soon as I stepped off the pitch and stood up on it, I could tell it was broken and I thought 'that was it'," he said.
"That was my first question to the surgeon, 'what was the worst case?' And he said it was three to four months and he said he would have to see."
Beckham says England's first game against Sweden on June 2 is his target.
"I'm going for the first game, but I am not going to take any risks because if it went again I would probably be out for six to seven months."
He added: "The response I've had from the fans, Man Utd, Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, West Ham - everybody has been amazing."
