Premiership: Beckham escapes unharmed from crash
Injured England captain David Beckham escaped unharmed after his top-of-the-range car was in a collision with another vehicle on a country road, it was reported today.
The Manchester United midfielder, whose left foot was broken in a challenge with Deportivo La Coruna’s Argentine defender Aldo Duscher two weeks ago, was at the wheel of the £160,000 (€260,600) Mercedes 500 at the time of the crash.
Newspapers said the car collided with a Ford Focus driven by an off-duty policeman on a ‘‘blind corner’’ close to Beckham’s home in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, last Thursday.
The footballer’s leg is currently in plaster but he was lawfully driving the car because it is an automatic.
Reports said the 26-year-old’s car suffered thousands of pounds of damage while the policeman’s vehicle sustained dents to the driver’s side front wing, front and rear doors.
Beckham is facing a race against time to be fit in time for England’s World Cup campaign in Japan and South Korea, which kicks off against Sweden on June 2.
He already looks likely to miss Manchester United’s final Champions League and Premiership matches and is undergoing intensive treatment to heal his damaged bone.
This allegedly includes sleeping in a special low-oxygen tent to help maintain his fitness while he is sidelined.
