Premiership: Boateng apologises for giving Leicester the boot
Aston Villa midfielder George Boateng has apologised to Leicester striker Paul Dickov after his boot-throwing antics at Filbert Street.
Boateng became involved after Dickov had clashed with Villa defender Mark Delaney at the end of the 2-2 draw on Saturday.
Dickov’s boot came off and was picked up by Boateng who threw it high into the air in the direction of the East Stand which was packed with spectators.
Referee Graham Poll confirmed that he had asked the Football Association to view a video of the incident to see whether any action should be taken against the Dutch international.
But Boateng has insisted there was no malice in his actions and today he said sorry to Dickov.
Boateng said: ‘‘I’ve apologised to Paul Dickov. I was frustrated because we didn’t win the match.
‘‘I did not throw the boot at the spectators. I just threw it in the air and it landed back on the pitch.
‘‘But I should not have done it. There was no malice intended and I apologise for my actions.’’
Villa manager Graham Taylor had already indicated he was unhappy with Boateng’s actions.
He said: ‘‘I am satisfied that there was no malicious intent in George’s actions.
‘‘However, I have told George that he was silly to do what he did and I have given him a severe warning that such behaviour will not be tolerated in the future. He accepts he was wrong.’’
