Early goals from Stuart Byrne and Fergal Coleman were more than enough to earn Longford this win and give them a six points cushion over third-bottom Dundalk.

Town tore into bottom of the tale Monaghan and were 2-0 up within 18 minutes.

Byrne stabbed home the first on seven minutes after Monaghan keeper John Brown failed to hold a Keith O'Connor header from a Stuart Holt corner.

Alan Kirby then split the Monaghan defence to pick out Fergal Coleman who shot to the bottom corner for the second goal on 18 minutes.
