FA Cup: Peterborough come close to Toon shock

Newcastle are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 win over Peterborough but they were made to battle against the Posh.

Newcastle are through to the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 4-2 win over Peterborough but they were made to battle against the Posh.

The teams were level at 2-2 with seven minutes to go before Alan Shearer converted a penalty and a minute later Aaron Hughes headed home to put the game beyond the Posh.

Andy O’Brien put Newcastle ahead on 13 minutes and Jamie McClen shot the away side into a 2-0 lead just before the break.

However, three minutes into the second half O’Brien went from hero to villain when he bulleted a header into his own net.

That goal inspired Peterborough David Farrell made it two 20 minutes later.

With 10 minutes to go Peterborough were looking to a replay at St James’s Park but out of a corner the refereee spied a handball against McKenzie.

Newcastle skipper Alan Shearer converted the resulting spot kick. A minute later Newcastle put the game beyond doubt when Aaron Hughes headed home to secure the win.
