Everton 0, Man Utd 2

In the end quality told over toil. Ryan Giggs scored one and made the clincher to keep Manchester United’s title revival on course.

This was the champions’ fourth straight victory, and Everton despite such effort and commitment couldn’t live with them.

Giggs, with his crosses from the left, was beginning to have a say in the proceedings, and the Welshman struck with a devastating goal on 77 minutes.

Beckham’s brilliant ball in from the left was met by Giggs at full tilt to power a header past Simonsen.

Paul Gascoigne was the last throw of the dice for Everton, taking over from Alexandersson with nine minutes left.

But it was Giggs again on 84 minutes with a blistering run and cross who set up Van Nistelrooy to smash in the second.
