Ipswich 0, Newcastle 1 (latest)

Nolberto Solano has put Newcastle ahead in their game against Ipswich at Portman Road.

While Robson and Dyer were given cordial receptions back at Portman Road, former Norwich winger Craig Bellamy’s first touch was predictably booed.

There was little excitement in the opening exchanges, with Nikos Dabizas requiring lengthy treatment to a head wound as the visitors were put under early pressure.

While Dabizas was fit to continue, Bent was proving to be Ipswich’s most dangerous attacking force, although his crisp, low cross sped across the face of the penalty area and just evaded Jamie Clapham.

Newcastle’s only early threat was a free-kick which sailed harmlessly over the bar from Laurent Robert but then Ipswich’s troubled defence suddenly parted to allow them to seize the lead on 20 minutes.

When Nolberto Solano flicked the ball over his shoulder, Gary Speed was left completely unmarked and although his shot was saved by Matteo Sereni at point-blank range, Solano was left in space to prod home the rebound.
