The different sides in the dispute over television money called a news conference today where it was expected to be announced that the players’ strike has been averted.

Although no final deal has been publicised, it is believed an announcement that a general settlement has been achieved will be made at the conference later this morning.

The conference was taking place at the Hilton Hotel, Manchester Airport.

No figures are known and although the Professional Footballers’ Association first announced that the dispute had been resolved, it is understood the final details of the agreement still have to be rubber-stamped.

The major Premiership matches that would have been hit by a players strike:

December 1: Aston Villa v Leicester, Blackburn v Middlesbrough, Charlton v Newcastle, Derby v Liverpool, Ipswich v Arsenal, Manchester United v Chelsea, Sunderland v West Ham.

December 2: Everton v Southampton, Fulham v Leeds.
