Soccer: Adams backs footballers' union
Tony Adams will back the footballers’ union all the way in a players’ strike over a funds dispute with the Premier League.
Professional Footballers Association chief executive Gordon Taylor, currently embroiled in a fierce war of words with the league over the allocation of hundreds of millions of pounds in revenue from a new television deal, claims he is unaware of a single dissenting voice among his union's members.
Adams today confirmed he is one player Taylor can certainly count on.
The Arsenal captain is adamant he must support the PFA because of the help the union has given players past and present.
"The amount of money being spent by the PFA on health and re-education programmes is more than ever before, and we are asking for less of a percentage than ever before," Adams said.
‘The money is not for me but I am the sort of player who might have to strike for everyone to sit up and take notice so that youngsters - and 75% of them are out of the game by the time they are 21 - can get re-education funding.
Adams said: "Of course Manchester United and their players can pay for themselves but others lower down can’t."
