Soccer: Maier taunts 'past his best' Seaman

Germany's legendary keeper Sepp Maier has taunted England's David Seaman ahead of Saturday's World Cup qualifier in Munich, claiming the Arsenal keeper is a spent force.

The 55-year-old Maier, now a goalkeeping coach for Bayern Munich, believes Sven-Goran Eriksson has blundered by sticking with 38-year-old Seaman.

Maier said Seaman handed the Germans victory at Wembley last year by allowing Dietmar Hamann's innocuous 35-yard free-kick sneak through his grasp.

"David Seaman is past his best," Maier said. "Even I would have saved that shot - and I don't play football any more.

"That goal still hangs over him. Seaman reacted way too late and we won because of his mistake.

"He used to be the best keeper in the world, but not any more. At Euro 96 he proved he was a fine keeper. But it's results that count and Seaman hasn't been the same in recent years.

"I don't think Seaman has the same standing in the game as our keeper Oliver Kahn, who is better."
