Soccer: Irwin holds talks with Watford bosses

Irish international Denis Irwin has held talks with Watford manager Gianluca Vialli and coach Ray Wilkins about a possible move to the First Division club.

Irwin's contract at Manchester United expired yesterday and he has stalled on signing a one-year extension to see if any other clubs are interested.

He told a British tabloid that a number of clubs have expressed an interest, but the 35-year-old is still considering his options and will make a decision in the coming days.

United said yesterday that they are confident Irwin will sign the new one-year deal they offered him following the end of the season.

However, Middlesbrough, Leicester and now Watford have all signalled an interest in the Irish defender and his future at Old Trafford is by no means certain.

Watford coach Ray Wilkins feels Irwin's experience could help Watford to return to the Premiership next season.

However, Middlesbrough manager Steve McLaren, who was one of Irwin's closest allies when he was assistant manager at United, is also vying for the Irishman's services.

Leicester boss Peter Taylor also hopes to approach Irwin in the coming days.

"I believe I am still playing well enough to compete for a first-team place," Irwin said, "and in that sense there's no great pressure on me to move. It's a question of doing what is best for myself and my family."
