Soccer: Sheri still sweet on United
Teddy Sheringham is set to accept a new one-year contract at Manchester United.
Sheringham claims he is not holding out for a two-year deal and insists he has no problems about signing on for another 12 months at Old Trafford.
The England striker turned 35 this week and he understands why the club are reluctant to offer him a longer agreement at his age.
Several clubs, including Tottenham and West Ham, are monitoring negotiations between Sheringham and United and would be keen to try to sign him in the summer when he would be out of contract.
However Sheringham, who is United’s top scorer with 20 goals this season, wants to stay at Old Trafford.
"I have been offered a one-year contract, which is no problem at all for me," he said.
"A 12-month deal keeps me quite happy because if I’m not in the team and not playing well, then I wouldn’t want to be here.
"A year-to-year situation for me at my age is quite right.
"You have to take things as they come when you get to my age. I am quite happy with things on that score."
Sheringham’s agent Barry Nevill has replied to United’s contract offer and is waiting for them to come back to him.
Sheringham claims there are still some parts of the deal, which is reportedly worth £35,000 a week, which need further attention.
"The contract discussions are still at an early stage and there are things in the contract, which the club need to sort out,’’ he said.
"But a one-year deal suits me."
