Premiership: Hoddle finally confirmed as Spurs boss

Glenn Hoddle has finally been given the green light to become the new manager of Tottenham after Southampton released his registration.

Hoddle was unveiled as Spurs' new boss at a White Hart Lane press conference on Friday.

The north London club officially announced his appointment on a five-year contract through a statement to the Stock Exchange.

But the former England coach was unable to begin training with his new team until legal matters had been completed.

However, a statement from the Saints said: "Southampton Football Club can confirm that the transaction relating to Glenn Hoddle's departure from Southampton has today been completed and Glenn Hoddle's managerial registration has been released."

Southampton say details of the agreement will remain private, although it is believed Spurs have paid £800,000 compensation for Hoddle and £200,000 for his assistant John Gorman, who has also signed a five-year deal at White Hart Lane.

Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe said: "I am proud that Southampton Football Club acted properly throughout this matter.

"The papers have been signed and we have released Glenn's registration.

"Southampton Football Club is a public company fully listed on the London Stock Exchange. As such, matters of this nature have to be dealt with in a proper business-like fashion.

"When agreements are reached, both parties need to be informed and documents must be signed. The documents have now been signed and the matter has been resolved."

Spurs director of football David Pleat took training because Hoddle and Gorman were still in limbo.

However, Tottenham executive chairman David Buchler told said: "Everything is resolved.

"It was purely and simply a case of getting signatures on documents and I think Southampton have a been a bit slower than we otherwise expected.

"I announced on Friday that the whole deal had been done, but I made the point that it was subject to Rupert Lowe's signature being on the document and Rupert Lowe was away.

"There were a couple of slight details that needed clarification, but there was nothing serious at all."
