Champions League: Beckenbauer blasts Bayern players

Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer blasted his players after they crashed 3-0 at Lyon in a one-sided Champions League clash.

"It was shameful," a disgusted Beckenbauer said. "To play worse than that is just not possible and it was a disaster in every section of the field.

"You can play like that against a team of old men, but not in the Champions League. If we play the same way next week against Arsenal, there will be nothing more for us to do in the competition."

With the victory the French side kept their Champions League hopes alive and denied Bayern Munich the chance to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Young striker Sidney Govou was the chief tormentor of the Bundesliga champions, netting twice and setting up the third for Pierre Laigle.

A draw would have been enough for Bayern to progress, but their three-goal mauling means Lyon, who visit bottom-club Spartak Moscow in the final game, are now only three points behind the Germans.

Lyon took the lead in the 12th minute with skipper Sonny Anderson breaking down the right-hand side and pulling the ball back for Govou.

The 21-year-old forward hit his shot from 10 yards out, beating goalkeeper Oliver Kahn at his near post.

Govou was on target again eight minutes later with a superb solo effort doubling the French side's lead.

He picked the ball up on the left before cutting inside and unleashing a powerful right-footed shot past Kahn.

Anderson had the ball in the net for Lyon again in the 32nd minute, but his spectacular volley was disallowed as he had strayed offside.

Bayern gradually began to creep back into the game but were frustrated by a strong Lyon defence.

And the home side made the game safe on 71 minutes with Govou again proving the tormentor for the Bundesliga champions.

He worked the ball well on the right before he crossed for Laigle who finished off from close range.
