Mountfield resigns from Cork City

Cork City Manager Derek Mountfield is believed to have told his players that he is leaving the club he joined only 6 months ago.

It is understood he was asked to stand down by club directors after losing at home to Shamrock Rovers last Wednesday.

Cork had already bowed out of the FAI Cup when they lost against Longford two weeks ago.

The former Everton defender apparently refused the earlier request but when Cork was beaten 4-0 by St Pat's yesterday it seems he was forced to reconsider.

Assistant manager Liam Murphy is expected to take hold of the reins for the remainder of the season.
