McGeady was one of the 24 players who got the Republic of Ireland’s preparations for next month’s European Championship in France underway at the National Sports Campus and it must have been a humbling experience checking in to the team hotel in Castleknock on Sunday.

The former Celtic player was offered an escape route from his purgatory at Everton in January, but he has failed to make the most of the opportunity at Hillsborough where he has now fallen out of favour as Wembley, and maybe the Premier League, loom large.
