How the Irish fared: Jonathan Douglas delivers as Ipswich get home boost
Trailing 1-0 against QPR, Douglas hooked the ball into the net 13 minutes from the end after Daryl Murphy’s initial effort had been blocked.
The goal set up a grandstand finale and Mick McCarthy’s men grabbed a stoppage-time winner that kept them in the final play-off spot.
“Perhaps we didn’t deserve it but maybe it will change our luck going forward at home,” McCarthy said.
“It was pretty turgid and we have played a lot better than that and lost but the result is everything in football.
“What I love about my team is that they will keep going to the 95th minute. If you’ve got that in your team, you always have a chance.”
Saturday’s big Championship clash saw Hull City record an emphatic 3-0 win over promotion rivals Burnley.
Victory lifted the Tigers to third and left midfielder David Meyler a content man.
“We’re thrilled to get the three points at home,” he said. “It was obviously a massive game against a team that are next to us in the table. To beat them in the manner we did is obviously a great positive for us.”
Elsewhere, Chris Hughton’s Brighton were held to a scoreless draw at Brentford.
Hughton said: “We wanted to get back to winning ways, but they are a good team and they cause a lot of problems with their movement.”
In League One, a David Mooney goal helped play-off hopefuls Southend to a 2-0 win at Colchester while Paddy Madden’s 11th of the season pushed Scunthorpe towards the relative comfort of mid-table as his goal secured a 1-0 win at Doncaster.
Madden paid tribute to fellow Irishman Stephen Dawson after the midfielder excelled following a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Madden said: “He’s one of my best friends, but the guy is unbelievable. He’s fully fit now, and this was his first 60 minutes in a while. When that guy is on his game, there’s not a midfielder in this division that’s better than him. He has everything.”
In League Two, a goal from Barry Corr helped Cambridge United to a 3-0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
In the Scottish Premiership, Adam Rooney’s 14th goal of the season — from the penalty spot in stoppage time — rescued a 2-2 for Aberdeen at home to Inverness.
