Di Maria on way out as Wayne Rooney becomes a Toffee again
Di Maria was due to hold talks with PSG officials in Doha last night and is expected to undergo a medical with the French champions. If all goes to plan, he could sign for PSG as early as today.
United gave Di Maria permission to speak to PSG after agreeing a fee with the big-spending French club.
United signed Di Maria from Real Madrid for âŹ85million last summer, but after an encouraging start his form dipped drastically and he only started one of the final 10 games of last season.
The former Real Madrid winger was left unsettled after an attempted burglary on his Cheshire home in February.
Since then, the 27-year-old and his family have been living in a city-centre apartment in Manchester owned by former United defender Phil Neville.
Di Maria said as recently as June that he wanted to stay at United, but it became apparent that he had his heart set on a move to the French capital in the last couple of weeks.
The Argentinian was due to report for duty during the second leg of Unitedâs pre-season tour of the United States on July 25, but failed to show.
Meanwhile, Unitedâs Wayne Rooney returned to Goodison Park yesterday to play in an Everton team for the first time in 11 years â and was delighted with the warm welcome he received.
The Manchester United and England captain is a lifelong Everton supporter and came up through the ranks with the Toffees before leaving for Old Trafford in 2004.
He has since won five Premier League titles and the Champions League â but was often subject to jeers and negative chants when returning to his former club with United.
Yesterday he turned out for Duncan Fergusonâs testimonial match against Villarreal, playing the final 15 minutes alongside the retired forward who he idolised.
âI was delighted with the fansâ reaction,â Rooney said. âI didnât know what to expect but it was great for me and my kids, to see me once in an Everton shirt. It brought back some good old memories.
âI enjoyed it. It is nice to come back here and the fans gave me a great reception which obviously I was delighted with.â
There was to be no grand return for either Rooney or Ferguson as goals from Gerard and Nahuel put Villarreal two goals up before young defender Ty Browning scored a late consolation as the visitors won 2-1.
Rooney struck a marvellous effort as he looked to mark his emotional homecoming with a goal â but the 29-year-old was more concerned with a memorable day for Ferguson.
âIt was nice to get some minutes on the pitch alongside Duncan,â Rooneyadded.
âI saw a bit of space and thought I would try my luck, unfortunately it didnât go in but it was a great occasion and great to get out on the pitch with Duncan again. Most importantly it was a big day for Duncan and he really enjoyed the game.
âOf course, it was a bit different today. Going into the home dressing roomagain was a bit weird at first. I didnât know what to expect with the reception but it was great and I really appreciate it.â
