Trevor Croly quits as Bray in strife again

Not for the first time this season, confusion surrounded Bray Wanderers last night with manager Trevor Croly understood to have quit ahead of this evening’s Airtricity League fixture in Limerick (6.30pm).

It’s believed Croly took the decision following a week of off-field strife that included playing staff delays in wages and plan to add new recruits being shelved.

Yesterday, the Seagulls refused to comment on the situation but it’s thought highly unlikely that Croly will be in charge for what is a vital match against the division’s basement side at Markets Field.

The former Shamrock Rovers boss only took the job seven weeks ago. His predecessor Alan Mathews had walked out over alleged non-payment of wages and, at his unveiling, Croly vowed to do likewise if players experienced problems getting paid.

Croly had proven a success since arriving, guiding the team to a draw and three wins, including last Saturday against Sligo Rovers.

Limerick, marooned at the foot of the table, will aim to profit in a game they have to win if survival is to be considered a viable outcome. Should winger Ian Turner overcome a knee injury to play, he’ll be a key part of their bid to end a seven-game losing streak.

Elsewhere, having undergone a recent spate of turmoil too, Sligo are in dire need of three points against Galway United at the Showgrounds (7.45pm).

Joseph Ndo and Gavin Dykes continue to take temporary charge of a side that will be weakened by the absence of injured quintet Jeff Henderson (foot), John Russell (hip), Kevin Devaney (ankle), Stephen Folan (hamstring) and Ruairi Keating (hamstring).

Galway have an abysmal record in Sligo but manager Tommy Dunne reckons history should have no bearing on this meeting.

“You have to forget about the previous 34 visits, there’s no point dwelling on the past,” he insisted.

“We’re under no illusions that it will be a battle but we’re hungry to do well and the Showgrounds is a great place to play.”

Jason Molloy is ruled out for the Tribesmen with a back injury, while Sam Oji’s hamstring knock is still a concern for Dunne.

Bohemians manager Keith Long, meanwhile, wants his team to bounce back from last week’s defeat when they travel to Longford Town tonight (7.30pm).

Veteran striker Jason Byrne, who missed the defeat against Drogheda United, will remain sidelined with a calf injury along with Dylan Hayes.
