Evelyn Daly has plenty of fighting spirit to call on

Evelyn Daly doesn’t have to look far to tap into a fighting spirit ahead of today’s UEFA Women’s Under 17 European Championship opener because her brother is a cage fighter.

Evelyn Daly has plenty of fighting spirit to call on

A rising star, who is very much on the UFC radar, Ciaran has carved out a reputation as someone who epitomises commitment and a full-blooded attitude. And so does his sister, who is a key player for the Republic of Ireland.

The Cork siblings share a tenacious streak that has allowed them to succeed in their chosen sports and it’s something that Daly will call on for Ireland as they take on France in Group B in Reykjavik this afternoon.

“I think I take his bravery onto the pitch. I go into anything, to be honest. I throw my body on the line and I think I get that from him,” said Daly, 16, of her brother.

Dave Connell’s team qualified for the tournament as the best runners-up – despite going unbeaten in qualifying – but midfield dynamo Daly feels that they can surprise their group rivals that also includes Switzerland and Norway.

“All of the other countries will be like: ‘Ah, it’s just Ireland, small nation, not good, we’ll slaughter them’. But it’s the opposite – we’re hardworking, we’re tactical, we are well able to win it, and all of the girls feel that we can win it,” said Daly.

Last summer, the Ireland Women’s U19 side reached the European semi-finals – under the guidance of Connell – but this team, who are known as the Ice Queens, want to surpass that achievement.

“It would be brilliant if we could do what the Under 19s did last year, except get that extra bit further. If we get into the final, we’ll have shown everyone in the world how good Ireland are and how the sport has improved around Ireland,” stated Daly.

“We’re a hardworking team, we’re all very close to each other, we’re like a family, and that helps us play better as well. And I think we’re going to show a lot of countries how good we are.” Connell has a full squad to pick from and they know the importance of getting off to a good start. With Daly fighting their corner, they have a great chance.
