Charlie Austin confident 1995 debacle won’t be repeated

Charlie Austin believes England and Ireland have “moved on” from the despicable scenes of 20 years ago as the Three Lions return to Dublin for the first time since 1995. Back then, the Lansdowne Road encounter had to be swiftly abandoned after hooligans causes chaos.

Acquaintances were renewed in May 2013 when Ireland travelled to Wembley for a 1-1 friendly draw, a game which passed without incident – something uncapped QPR striker Austin is confident will be replicated.

“I believe we can go to Ireland and put on a good performance. You can imagine it being a big atmosphere and I know that we’ve moved on from 20 years ago now and the fans that will be going there will provide great support like they have been throughout the years.”

Police are to clamp down on known troublemakers in a bid to head off problems in Dublin. England fans will have to collect their tickets in Dublin and hooligans with banning orders will have to surrender their passport to English police stations between 10am and 1pm, when the match kicks off.

Additionally, the FA has written to fans with tickets warning them that recent chants of “fuck the IRA” must not be repeated.
