Cork City blow as John Dunleavy out for four months

Cork City will be without its captain John Dunleavy for up to four months after the club confirmed that he will undergo surgery tomorrow on the knee injury he sustained in last Friday’s 1-2 defeat to Dundalk at Turner’s Cross.

Having fallen awkwardly early in the game, Dunleavy received lengthy treatment on the pitch before being stretchered off, and the apparent seriousness of the injury at the time has since been confirmed by specialists.

Described as “a meniscal” injury — or cartilage tear — the problem, although affecting the same knee, is not related to an existing cartilage issue which the player had been managing in recent times.

Following his surgery, Dunleavy will begin a rehabilitation programme with the club’s medical staff.

The versatile Dunleavy, whether deployed in defence or midfield, has been a key player for Cork City boss John Caulfield, with the manager yesterday making no attempt to minimise his loss to the side.

“It is obviously extremely disappointing for Johnny and for us to lose him for the next few months,” said Caulfield.

“He is in very good hands with the medical team at the club and we all wish him a speedy recovery.”

Alan Bennett is City’s likely replacement skipper while Dunleavy is out, beginning with next Monday’s trip to Dalymount Park to take on Bohemians in the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division.
