Van Gaal wants De Vrij at United

The 22-year-old defender has been a vital part of Van Gaal’s Netherlands squad at the World Cup squad and would provide versatility at United - he can play at centre-back or full-back.

De Vrij scored in the Holland’s 5-1 demolition of Spain in their opening group gamein Brazil and would cost £8m to bring to Manchester from current club Feyenoord.

The defender had agreed a move to Italian team Lazio prior to the World Cup but it is thought the deal is now off due to interest from other clubs.

United have already started their summer spending with deals for Southampton’s Luke Shaw and Athetic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera completed.

It is expected that their business is not finished with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward keen to make a statement on the club’s ambition after a poor season in 2013/14 - United finished seventh and failed to make the Champions League for the first time since 1997.

Van Gaal is also said to be interested in Feyenoord right-back Daryl Janmaat.
