Dutch masters leave Spain on canvas

The Netherlands showed up here too young and too green to make much of an impact. Spain showed up too good to be beaten. Ninety minutes later and this tournament has a new contender. As for the champions, four years ago they became the first team to win the World Cup having lost the opening game, but their path looks even more difficult now, and all that on the back of an unimaginable rout that saw them concede five for first time since 1963. So significant was it that this may be the end of an era for a team that looked as tired as they did complacent.
“This is very delicate moment for us. We must all try and resolve this, beat Chile, and move on from there,” said Spanish boss Vicente del Bosque. “There is no need for a revolution. We did not win, but we will move on and try to win next game.”
