City sign Sagna on three-year deal
The 31-year-old, currently at the World Cup with France, agreed a three-year deal yesterday, having rejected an improved contract from the Gunners.
Sagna will officially join City on his return from Brazil and has been given the vacant number three shirt, which he also wore for Arsenal. Sagna made 284 appearances for the club after signing from Auxerre in the summer of 2007.
Sagna will contest the right-back slot with established first-choice Pablo Zabaleta, widely considered the most consistent Premier League performer in that position for the last two years, and the Frenchman’s arrival almost certainly signals the end of Micah Richards’ career at the club.
Manager Manuel Pellegrini is still trying to bring in reinforcements for the centre of defence with Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala, as well as the Portuguese side’s defensive midfielder Fernando, targets.
Meanwhile, David Luiz’s move from Chelsea to Paris Saint-Germain was confirmed last night.
Luiz signed for Chelsea from Benfica in January 2011 made 143 Blues appearances — 34 of them last season, including against PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals — scoring 12 goals.
Elsewhere, goalkeeper Julian Speroni has signed a new contract with Crystal Palace. Argentinian Speroni has played more than 300 games for the Eagles since signing from Dundee back in 2004.
Forward Magaye Gueye has left Everton by mutual consent to end a disappointing stay at Goodison Park. The 23-year-old signed from Strasbourg for £1m on five-year contract in 2010 but made just 39 appearances, the majority as substitute.
And former England midfielder David Bentley has retired from football aged 29, insisting the game has become “robotic and boring”. Bentley played for seven different professional clubs, including Tottenham, where he moved for £15m in 2008.
“I’ve fallen out of love with the game,” Bentley said yesterday.
