City rediscover winning feeling with cup victory
First-half goals from Ian Turner and Shane Duggan set City up nicely, with Danny Furlong, against his former club, securing the Leesiders’ progression with a second-half brace.
Sligo Rovers had an easy night at the office, beating 10-man Mervue United 4-0 at the Showgrounds. An early Anthony Elding penalty, after Barry O’Mahony saw red for the visitors for a handball on the goal-line, sent the Bit O’Red on their way before a second from Evan McMillan on the hour mark made the result safe.
Danny Ventre added a third and Elding bagged his second in the first minute of injury time.
The biggest win of the night came at Hunky Dory Park though, as Drogheda United struck six past First Division leaders Longford Town without reply.
Dean Gaynor, Peter Hynes, Alan McNally and Graham Rusk scored one each, while Jason Marks notched a brace, only to be denied a hat-trick by missing a 53rd minute penalty.
Extra-time was needed in the other four games, with the only Premier Division clash between Bohemians and Bray Wanderers ending up 2-2 after 90 minutes before Bohs went on to win 4-2 after extra time.
Stephen Traynor and Chris Lyons had given Bohs a 2-0 lead inside 11 minutes, but Bray pegged them back through strikes from Danny O’Connor and Ishmail Akinade before half-time.
Lyons grabbed his second in extra time and Kevin O’Leary added a fourth.
There was late drama in the Munster derby at Thomond Park as Limerick’s Barry Sheedy struck a 93rd-minute equaliser against Waterford United. Vinny Sullivan put the Blues in front on the half hour, but they were unable to play out the final stages and were also taken to an additional 30 minutes.
Extra time could not separate the sides and eventually the game went to penalties, where Limerick progressed 4-2.
Ireland internationals James McClean and Seamus Coleman were both at Finn Park to see Derry City claim the north-west derby spoils beating Finn Harps 6-5 on penalties after an epic penalty shootout last night.
The game had been tied at 1-1 at the end of the 90 after Harps’ Aaron O’Hagan regained parity following Rory Patterson’s 17th minute lead goal for the visitors.
St Patrick’s Athletic had to come from a goal down twice before edging Salthill Devon 3-2 after extra-time at Drom last night.
The Galway side, bottom of the First Division, were in front on 51 through Enda Curran, but an own goal from Cian Fadden nine minutes later brought the sides back level.
Brian Geraghty put Devon back in front but Jake Kelly equalised for the Saints before Peter Durrad grabbed a late winner as penalties loomed.
