Arsene Wenger will say in the end his team were unfortunate not to earn a point at Stamford Bridge following a second-half revival in a 2-1 defeat; he can also point to Theo Walcott’s goal to mark the signing of a new contract and to new deals for other key players such as Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Carl Jenkinson.

But whenever you think Arsenal’s glass is becoming half full, something happens on the pitch to suggest it is still heading the other way.
