Blues hopeful Fahey can return in ‘a few weeks’

Republic of Ireland international midfielder Keith Fahey has returned to Birmingham City for a medical check-up after being on compassionate leave since November.

Fahey has had talks with manager Lee Clark but a return to action does not look imminent as he has since returned to Ireland.

“He has been over and met the medical team,” Clark said.

“He is doing extremely well and we are looking to the next few weeks for Keith to rejoin. That will be in Keith’s hands and the doctor and the medical team.

“It is something that I cannot keep pursuing, it has to come from Keith. He came over for a couple of days and had a very productive meeting and then went back to Ireland.

“He will keep us informed about what is happening. I spoke to him while he was here. He appeared to be in good spirits.”

Fahey’s last appearance for Birmingham was against Leicester City on October 20.

Meanwhile Stephen Hunt will return to full training at Wolves on Monday for the first time since September. Hunt has been sidelined following surgery to have some bone shaved from his hip. Wolves’ manager Dean Saunders is optimistic Hunt will be able to resume playing within three weeks: “Hunty is ready to train. He has done a couple of days this week and he will be back on Monday,”

Elsewhere West Brom manager Steve Clarke has revealed fit-again defender Steven Reid played with a broken leg for 45 minutes of last month’s clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

Reid made his comeback as a substitute during the midweek FA Cup defeat against QPR.

Clarke said: “He played for 45 minutes with a broken leg, which shows the character of the boy.

“Sometimes people think ’Steven is always injured’ but he has an incredible strong mental strength and he wants to play.”
