Meyler’s first half header gave the Tigers the lead before his international team-mate Robbie Brady made it 2-0 with a fine free-kick.

Bruce worked with Meyler during his time in charge of Sunderland and hailed the on-loan midfielder’s contribution.

“I’ve had the pleasure of working with David now twice and if every footballer had that kid’s mentality and enthusiasm there wouldn’t be a bad word said about any footballer,’’ Bruce said.

“He’s a delight to work with. He’s not blessed with natural, wonderful ability but he’s got a heart as big as himself and I’m delighted for him after two years out with bad knee injuries he’s come here and shown what a good player he is.

“He’s delighted. His dad has made the trip and he’s done very, very well.’’

It was a good day for the Irish contingent in the Championship, with Conor Sammon scoring Derby’s opener in their 3-1 win over Leeds United.

Leeds’ goal was scored by Paul Green.

Owen Garvan grabbed a goal for Crystal Palace but the Eagles had to settle for a point in a 2-2 home draw with Blackpool.

Elsewhere, Daryl Murphy scored in Ipswich’s 3-0 win over Millwall, Stephen Dawson’s strike helped Barnsley to a 2-2 at Leicester while Andy Reid played a starring role in Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 victory over Burnley.
