Whelan sent off in Stoke’s Florida friendly win

The Irish contingent at Stoke had a mixed weekend as one proved a match-winner, another was sent off and a third was forced off injured in the Potters’ 1-0 friendly victory over Orlando at the Citrus Bowl in Florida on Saturday.

Whelan sent off in Stoke’s Florida friendly win

A first-half Jonathan Walters volley settled the match in Stoke’s favour, but Glenn Whelan was dismissed after picking up two booking in quick succession.

Marc Wilson limped off with a knee injury 10 minutes remaining, something that will concern not just Stoke boss Tony Pulis but Ireland manager Giovanni Trapattoni after the left back, who was omitted for Euro 2012, was included in the squad for next month’s friendly against Serbia.

Whelan’s was dismissed after he was booked for a foul on Rodrigo Lopez and a scuffle with former Potters player James O’Connor.

Pulis stressed that Stoke would need to clarify the situation regarding Whelan’s red card, although he said he would be surprised if it led to a domestic ban.

“It was a friendly match and it was outside the UK,’’ Pulis said.

“I wouldn’t have thought it would result in him serving any sort of suspension, but we will have to check with the authorities to determine what the situation is now.’’
