Missing out

For many it will be a summer to savour. For an unlucky minority though, Euro 2012 will bring only despair and frustration as, for one reason or another, they won’t be there, says Darren Norris

Olexandr Shovkovskiy: The veteran Dynano Kiev goalkeeper will miss the tournament after undergoing shoulder surgery, leaving Ukraine with a keeper crisis.

Bacary Sagna: The defender will miss out after breaking his right leg with Arsenal in their penultimate game of the season.

Carles Puyol: The Barcelona captain is set to miss out on Spain’s title defence after having surgery on his right knee.

Rio Ferdinand: Roy Hodgson insists Ferdinand’s omission was due to footballing reasons but many believe it was because John Terry – who is facing a court case for allegedly racially abusing Ferdinand’s brother Rio – was selected.

Domenico Criscito: The Italian left back misses out as he bids to clear his name of match-fixing allegations. Police turned up at Italy's training base to tell the Zenit defender he was under investigation in a wide-ranging fix probe. Nasty.

Simon Rolfes: The Bayer Leverkusen captain was surprisingly left out of Joachim Loew’s squad after struggling for form last season.

James McCarthy: The Wigan midfielder finished last season superbly but opted out of Euro 2012 as his father is battling cancer.

Urby Emanuelson: The versatile AC Milan man was included in Bert van Marwijk’s provisional squad but was one of those dropped when the squad was reduced.

Jack Wilshere: The gifted midfielder misses out after a nightmare season where he failed to kick a ball.

John Guidetti: The Sweden striker, with 20 goals in 23 games during a loan spell at Feyenoord from parent club Man City this season, misses out due to a virus.

David Villa: Spain’s record goalscorer is the biggest name to miss out after failing to recover from a broken leg.
