Fermoy edge Carrig to secure MSL promotion

Fermoy will be playing Premier Division football next season after defeating Carrigaline United 1-0 in the Munster Senior League First Division play-off decider at Carrig Park yesterday.

With Fermoy, Carrigaline and Bandon all finishing level on 38 points, the second promotion spot was decided on a three-way play-off. And Graham Byrne was the hero as his strike on the stroke of half-time clinched Fermoy promotion, following up last week’s victory over Bandon, to win their two play-off games.

It was tough on Carrigaline, who topped the league for much of the season but just couldn’t finish the job. And it was Fermoy who sneaked into the play-off on the last day of the league season, and will now join First Division champions UCC in the Premier Division next season.

Premier Division champions and FAI Intermediate Cup winners, Avondale United finished off the league campaign with a 2-0 victory over Douglas Hall at Avondale Park on Saturday.

After going down 3-2 to Blarney United, who were relegated after Midleton defeated Everton in midweek, goals from Declan Cahill and Mark O’Sullivan either side of half-time seeing John Cotter’s side finish the league in style.

Afterwards stand-in skipper O’Sullivan was presented with the league trophy to cap a memorable season for the runaway league winners.

Meanwhile, a Shane Geasley double saw UCC claim the Pop Keller Cup with a 2-0 victory over Youghal United at O’Shea Park yesterday.

The win caps a superb season for the students, who also won the First Division title.

Youghal won’t be too disheartened, however, as they have already secured promotion to the First Division next season with two games to spare.

Elsewhere, Blarney United will have a chance to finish a disappointing season on a high when they contest the Beamish Stout Senior Cup final against the winners of the Everton versus College Corinthians semi-final after defeating Rockmount 3-2 in their semi-final at Rockmount Park yesterday.
